Idyllic Philippines are dead. With Watch List, American director Ben Rekhi is exposing the backstage : drug dealers chased by Duterte’s government. Maria’s destiny is recounted. Portrayed by Alessandra de Rossi, she has to raise her three children alone after her husband’s murder. Willing to find out the truth, she has to turn to an unorthodox cop interpreted by Jake Macapagal. Even with the violence of the subject, the film is deeply humane. Ben Rekhi’s fiction’s authenticity feels almost like a documentary, the first scene, camera on shoulder, in Manila’s slum being quite evocative. As a patern in this edition of the Deauville film festival, the movie’s main character is a strong and ambiguous woman.
