From August 29th to September 9th

The 75th “Mostra Internationale d’Arte Cinématographica” is set up on the Lido beach. It offers a tantalizing selection that shows that many American films now prefer to go through Venice and/or Toronto than Cannes to launch their Oscar race…                                                                                                                                                                 The jury will also be chaired by Guillermo del Toro, whose The Shape of Water has achieved the double Golden Lion at the Mostra and Oscar for best film last year.                                                                                                                    Among the films in competition name First Man by Damien Chazelle, the director of La La Land who finds Ryan Gosling again for this biopic of the first man on the moon, Double Vies by Olivier Assayas, 22 July by Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne, Vol 93…), Suspiria by Luca Guadagnino, The Nightingale by Australian Jennifer Kent (the only female director in competition), The Favourite of Yórgos Lánthimos and The Sisters Brothers by Jacques Audiard (bis).

But also Alphonso Cuaron’s Roma (Gravity) distributed by Netflix as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Joel and Etan Coen’s Western mini-series with James Franco and Liam Neeson … Another Netflix event, between tribute and surprise, the last film of Orson Welles, The Other Side of The Wind. Started in 1970 and unfinished until then, it was completed for the platform by Peter Bogdanovich. Main actor of this Hollywood satire and director of The Last Sitting and Mask. While a Golden Lion of Honor will be awarded to David Cronenberg (Videodrome, Crash…)
